Third race rained out - Some training instead

Finn's BMX racing opportunities occur either Friday evening or Sunday afternoon. Nina's typical work schedule on Sundays had us angling to race Friday night so she could attend and cheer on Finn. As luck would have it, he was in a pretty grumpy state Friday afternoon, so we thought better of it and punted to Sunday. Well, a thunderstorm on Sunday morning eventually cancelled the races and we didn't know it till we discovered the track was closed with standing water in the corners. So we stayed on site and went to the playground and spent some time on the bicycles.

Between race weekends, we've been trying to normalize having the bike with us or doing things on bikes. Finn and I take rides on my bike with the shotgun seat (where he sits in front of me, not behind) multiple times a week, weather permitting. We also took the opportunity to go to Tulsa Gathering Place park, where they have a small skate park with rollers like a mini BMX track. Finn tried that for a bit, but he mostly enjoyed being on my bike with me while I rode it.

As an only child who doesn't attend daycare, socializing Finn with other kids is always something we're seeking. He has fun playing with others, but he's not good at sharing and eventually the play ends with him hitting, biting , or just being overly-grabby with other kids and we have to intervene. It's really something we've gotta work on. Maybe it will sort itself out with time and repetition. Maybe not. We have some neighbor kids that are helping him stay exposed and socialized. Getting him to just play with them versus wanting to get out into the neighborhood on his bike has been a challenge.

Anyhow, with the race cancelled, we practiced coasting on a hill for a while. Finn experienced his first nice wipeout, luckily with his helmet on.

He didn't get up immediately, as he was a bit tangled up in the bike. I struggled in resisting the urge to stop filming and run over to lend aid. I was relieved when he readily shook it off and went back to riding. I was super thankful that it wasn't traumatic, knowing that it can be tough for kids to get over such events.

We had some snacks and made the most of that window between storms. Looking forward to racing again this weekend.
